6 Ways To Wear Navy This Autumn

Ernest Leoty is a luxury activewear brand whose DNA consists of classic silhouettes, textures and a refined palette repurposed for the modern woman. As such it’s hardly surprising that one of our staple colours is navy. Simply put: there is no hue that compares in terms of ease, wearability and enduring style. Below, we’ve picked 6 key ways to style navy from the AW18 collections shown earlier this year and from women who wear the colour exceptionally well.

With white

Give navy an edge by pairing it with a modern element such as a stark white boot as shown here at Jil Sander who channelled a 90s minimalist vibe, offsetting the classic dark blue against white leather accessories. If white isn't your colour, a bold red on the lips can really pop against a navy outfit. Sander has form with the colour having launched a casual lifestyle label in 2010 called Jil Sander Navy which, "incorporates the values of purity, simplicity and ease.’

With charcoal

Navy and black is a perennial favourite of style mavens, but for a more contemporary look think about swapping in charcoal which has blue undertones that compliment solid navy when worn side by side. This is the look to go to when you need to get out of the house quickly because it works without fail, every time, as demonstrated here by fashion blogger Lizzy Hadfield, a.k.a. Shot From The Street.

With a hat

Drama was the order of the day at Marc Jacobs’ FW18 show, as evidenced by oversized mannish coats and flat-brimmed hats by Stephen Jones. Navy headgear should be styled this autumn with enigmatic nonchalance to give a ‘who’s that girl?’ spine tingle for anyone in your midst. As well as mystique, they’re also pretty effective at keeping your hair in place and your ears warm.

With the coat

One essential for your wardrobe, regardless of season, is a navy coat. The richness of the cobalt hue coupled with the gold crest buttons, exaggerated shoulders and classic tailored silhouette combine to impart a subtle decadence that dresses up an otherwise casual daytime look for French Vogue editor Emmanuelle Alt. This is the perfect investment piece for layering over white t-shirts and under larger winter overcoats.

With textures

Fake fur, suede, patent leather: Emporio Armani’s FW18 collection covered all textural bases. Navy has a reputation as a classic fail-safe so using a combination of fabrics helps to keep it interesting and most importantly contemporary. Choose one standout element (the coat above is statement enough on its own), or mix up a whole bunch and be as bold as you like, the sophistication of navy will always keep things elegant.

With sneakers

You might not have to confront a sea of flashbulbs like Victoria Beckham but autumnal mornings can provide quite the blast of sunshine. So grab some oversized dark glasses, slip on some pristine white trainers to peek out from under a stunning pair of tailored navy trousers and you’re good to go. This look is understated chic at its finest.
